Laparoscopic Gynaecology

As technological advancements are taking giant strides in providing better patient care and enhanced surgical outcomes, the field of minimally-invasive surgery – Laparoscopy, has also evolved manifolds. One such subspecialty of Laparoscopy, Laparoscopic Gynaecology, is a replacement to open surgeries. Doctors employ the use of a laparoscopic tube to get a clear picture of the interior of one’s pelvic area.

A laparoscope is essentially a lighted, slender telescope that enables doctors to screen the inside conditions of the human body. This method is now being used extensively for gynaecological surgery, as well as other surgical departments. Diagnostic Laparoscopy helps identify some critical conditions such as endometriosis or fibroids.

With the help of a laparoscope, doctors can perform various minimally-invasive surgeries, some of them being:

  • Ovarian cyst removal
  • Tubal ligation, which is surgical contraception
  • Laparoscopic hysterectomy

Compared to an open surgical method, Laparoscopy has a shorter healing time as it also leaves residual scars. A surgeon may employ the use of a laparoscope to detect, diagnose, and cure several diseases.

There are various conditions under which a laparoscopy may be performed, some being:

  • A history of pelvic infection
  • Unexplained pelvic pain
  • Unexplained infertility

Conditions that might be diagnosed using laparoscopy include:

  • Reproductive cancers
  • Pelvic adhesions, or painful scar tissue
  • Ectopic pregnancy
  • Endometriosis
  • Uterine fibroids
  • Pelvic abscess, or pus
  • Infertility
  • Pelvic inflammatory disease
  • Ovarian cysts or tumors

Some of the many laparoscopic treatments comprise of:

  • Preparing for gynaecologic laparoscopy
  • Laparoscopy for infertility
  • Endometrial tissue ablation
  • Hysterectomy, or removal of the uterus
  • Removal of the ovaries
  • Burch procedure for incontinence
  • Removal of ovarian cysts
  • Removal of fibroids
  • Vault suspension to treat a prolapsed uterus
  • Blocking blood flow to fibroids
  • Adhesion removal
  • Reversal of a contraceptive surgery called tubal ligation
  • Laparoscopic myomectomy

About Laparoscopic Gynaecology

A laparoscopic procedure would always (normally) involve general anaesthesia which also allows for same-day discharge and lower postoperative pain. While a specialised tube called the catheter is inserted to collect a urine specimen, a tiny needle will inject Carbon Dioxide gas that acts as a wall between the abdominal membrane and the organs to curb the threat of injury. A small incision is made in the navel to make way for the laparoscope which further helps the doctors screen images onto a display. The subsequent steps are guided by the reports from the previous tests, and if required, surgeries may be performed with other incisions, as well as with a laparoscope guided procedure.

While laparoscopy is one of the most advanced surgical procedures, they too come with their cons. Certain risks are associated with laparoscopies, such as skin irritation and bladder infection.

Although rare, some serious complications may also include:

  • Damage to an abdominal blood vessel, the uterus, the bowel and the bladder
  • Problems with urinating
  • Nerve damage
  • Adhesions
  • Allergic reactions
  • Blood clots

There are factors that, if left ignored, can lead to serious side effects and outcomes:

  • Previous abdominal surgery
  • The CO2 used to fill the abdominal cavity can also cause complications sometimes
  • Obesity
  • Pelvic infection
  • Being very thin
  • Extreme endometriosis
  • Chronic bowel disease

Services:

Laparoscopy is a surgical diagnostic procedure used to examine the organs inside the abdomen. It is a low-risk, minimally-invasive procedure. Only small incisions are made.

Laparoscopy uses an instrument called a laparoscope to look at the inner abdominal organs. A laparoscope is a long, thin tube with a high-intensity light and a high-resolution camera at the front. The instrument is inserted through an incision in the abdominal wall. As it moves along, the camera sends images to a video monitor.

Laparoscopic procedures have several advantages, given the fact that they result in cosmetic or negligible scars, less post-operative pain, shorter hospital stay, early mobilization and resumption of daily activities, including less internal scarring. As this method is minimally invasive, fewer adhesions are made and there is minimal tissue handling. It doesn’t have too many disadvantages as such. Laparoscopy is a very popular method for diagnosis and surgery these days, which wouldn’t have been the case if there were multiple disadvantages. Although it is slightly more expensive than conventional open surgeries, it also depends on whether it is diagnostic or the procedure is being used to treat a certain condition. What one should also take into consideration are the advantages it offers when compared to conventional surgical methods. Moreover, doctors require special surgical training and expertise to conduct laparoscopic surgery.
