Heart Attack v/s Heart Failur

The heart is a vital organ that keeps us alive by pumping blood during every second of our lives. It provides oxygen and nutrients to other organs and tissues. Heart disease can lead to serious ailments by hampering the heart’s normal functioning.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), In the US, 1 out of 4 people die due to heart disease every year.

Heart disease and heart failure may have a common cause but both are different. Therefore, let us understand them in brief. Aster Hospitals is one of the best cardiology hospital in Dubai.

Heart attack

  • · It happens when the arteries that bring blood to the heart become severely narrowed or suddenly blocked
  • · A heart attack occurs when the blood flow inside the heart is less. The chances of a heart attack increase if a person is suffering from coronary artery disease.
  • · A coronary artery disease happens when plaque (fatty build-up) develops on the inside of the coronary arteries
  • · When the arteries become narrower, they can’t provide the necessary nutrients and oxygen to the heart.

Symptoms

The symptoms aren’t always noticeable. Many people may experience silent heart attacks and the symptoms can vary from person to person. In addition, the symptoms may be different among the people who had experienced heart attacks in the past.

Some of the common symptoms include

  • · Chest pain or discomfort
  • · Upper-body discomforts, such as in the arms, back, shoulders, neck, jaw, or stomach
  • · Shortness of breath
  • · Sweating
  • · Fatigue
  • · Nausea and vomiting
  • · Light-headedness or sudden dizziness

People experiencing these symptoms should consult the best cardiologist in Dubai.

Heart Failure

It is a condition where the heart doesn’t pump enough blood to the rest of the body. When the heart is damaged, the blood is collected behind the heart. The condition can lead to the pooling of fluid in the lungs, abdomen, and legs. Furthermore, the fluid build-up can be an indicator of a damaged heart.

Symptoms

People with heart failure may experience one of these symptoms regularly:

  • · Shortness of breath (especially when lying down)
  • · Wheezing or coughing
  • · Fast or irregular heartbeat
  • · Tiredness
  • · Swelling around your ankles, legs, or stomach and weight gain from retaining fluid
  • · Confusion

Tips to keep the heart healthy

Avoid unhealthy foods

One should limit the consumption of foods that are rich in sodium, sugar, and saturated or trans fats.

Limit alcohol consumption

People who consume more alcohol are at more risk of experiencing heart disease than non-drinkers. The best way to limit alcohol is to have one drink a day.

Quit smoking or never start

Smoking increases the risk of many health conditions, including heart disease. One should quit smoking by talking to a healthcare professional.

Exercise and regular check-ups

Regular exercise can prevent the development of heart attack and heart disease. One should at least exercise 30 minutes, daily.

Here are some of the good heart foods:

  • · Whole grains
  • · Fish and lean meats
  • · Low-fat dairy products
  • · Dark chocolate
  • · Gourd
  • · Green leafy vegetables
