Emergency Medicine

Road accidents, fire break-outs, cardiac arrests, etc. are certain situations where the victim/patient may need a time-sensitive, intensive, immediate care before his/her chances of survival go bleak. In a hospital or clinical setting, a dedicated department that takes care of such time-critical scenarios is referred to as the Emergency Department or Emergency Medicine. Emergency Medicine is sometimes also called accident medicine by the nature of the patients they attend to. This medical speciality particularly deals with the care and cure of injuries and / or illnesses warranting urgent medical attention. Emergency practitioners are trained to deal with unscheduled conditions, and patients not differentiated by age or sex. As the first touch point to receiving a comprehensive damage recovery procedure, emergency doctors are responsible for Stage 1 resuscitation, stabilization, initial investigations, interventions, to effectively diagnose and treat abnormalities / injuries at least until the patient is stable to be transferred to an organ-specific department or is ready to be discharged.

There are several places where the expertise and work of an emergency physician might come into play:

  • In-hospital emergency divisions
  • Pre-hospital conditions
  • ICU (Intensive Care Units or Critical Care Units)
  • Primary care settings like urgent care places

An emergency division may work with a range of sub-specialties, some being:

  • Disaster Medicine
  • Ultrasonography
  • Medical Toxicology
  • Critical Care Medicine
  • Sports Medicine
  • Aerospace Medicine
  • Palliative care
  • Hyperbaric Medicine

About Emergency

The broad domain of emergency medicine primarily involves both surgical and internal medical conditions. Modern hospitals may involve a setting where emergency physicians would treat a large volume of patients either through admission to hospital or release, decisions to be taken basis the current condition and the treatment regime being followed. They are also critical to providing temporary healthcare services to patients when it’s off-hours for other doctors or in hospitals where specific departments may or may not be available/functional. While the majority of the cases going inside the emergency department will involve patients with low-acuity conditions like exacerbations of chronic disease and/or minor r injuries, however a part of the volume will also comprise of illnesses and minor injuries.

Therefore, an emergency physician must be well versed with every domain of healthcare especially the ones corresponding to common emergency cases:

  • Advanced cardiac ventilation (life support)
  • Advanced airway management
  • Trauma resuscitation

While they do not have to be masters of all trades but basic knowledge of these specialties is required:

  • Intensive Care Medicine
  • Anesthesiology
  • Suture a complex laceration (Cosmetic Surgery)
  • Orthopedic Surgery (cure a fracture or dislocation)
  • Cardiology (treating heart attacks)
  • Neurology(Manage neurotic strokes)
  • Obstetrics and Gynecology (manage a pregnant patient with intense vaginal bleeding)
  • Otolaryngology (stop nosebleed)
  • Psychiatry (manage / control a patient suffering from mental instability / a mania)
  • Cardiothoracic Surgery
  • Radiology (Decipher X-Rays and Ultrasounds)
