There are 3 main types of non-invasive vascular tests. A venous ultrasound measures the blood flow in the veins of the legs and arms. A carotid ultrasound examines blood circulation through the carotid arteries to the brain. A renal artery ultrasound evaluates the blood flow through the renal arteries to the kidneys.
Duplex Ultrasound: This is another non-invasive imaging study that uses sound waves for the evaluation of blood flow in the blood vessels and to detect the presence of blockages.
Computed Tomography Angiography (CTA): This advanced imaging technology creates 3D pictures of blood vessels and tissues. The doctor injects a contrast dye to highlight the patient's tissues and blood vessels during this test. They then take a specialised X-Ray (CT scan) to view the highlighted area.
Magnetic Resonance Angiography (MRA): This non-invasive imaging test generates 2D and 3D images of the blood vessels. It can evaluate the blood flow and detect the blockages or narrowing of the arteries. MRA testing can be done with or without a contrast dye. Doctors generally use this test to diagnose blood clots and atherosclerosis.
Angiography: This vascular imaging procedure uses X-rays to look for blockages in the arteries or veins. An injected contrast material (iodine) is used to see how the blood flows through the blood vessel at specific locations in the body.

Vascular Treatments and Procedures

While a few procedures are performed as traditional "open" surgeries with incisions, a minimally invasive approach is used for others. Endovascular surgeries use tiny incisions and thin, flexible catheters placed inside a blood vessel to repair it.

Angioplasty: This procedure is used to widen a narrowed artery. During this procedure, the surgeon uses a device, such as a stent or a balloon, to open a clogged artery and restore the flow of blood. Cutting balloon angioplasty and balloon angioplasty are the two major types.
Stenting: This procedure helps widen an artery that's blocked due to plaque build-up. During this procedure, the surgeon implants tiny devices called stents (wire mesh tubes) in the affected artery to keep it open and prevent it from narrowing again. This procedure treats blocked or narrowed arteries, including the coronary arteries.
Endovascular Aneurysm Repair (EVAR): This procedure treats abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAAs) that form in the part of the aorta that runs through the chest and abdomen.
During this procedure, the surgeon makes small punctures in the skin instead of a long surgical incision. They then place a fabric tube with a metal mesh frame (stent graft) at the site of the aneurysm to provide a new path for blood flow.
Endovenous Laser Ablation (EVLA): This treatment is used for major varicose veins previously treated using stripping surgery. The surgeon uses a laser or high-frequency radio waves to seal off varicose veins during the procedure.
This allows healthy veins to restore the normal flow of blood. EVLA needs a tiny incision and generally has a shorter recovery period than surgery.
Sclerotherapy: This is a non-surgical treatment for varicose veins and spider veins. During this procedure, the surgeon injects a chemical solution into the affected vein, which causes it to collapse and gradually disappear. This treatment is most beneficial for patients with small varicose veins.
