Urology

Urology is a surgical speciality under healthcare science that majorly treats diseases and/or infections related to the male and female urinary tract and reproductive organs. The scope of organs under Urology include kidneys, adrenal glands, ureters, urinary bladder, and urethra. In human bodies, the urinary and reproductive tracts are very closely connected and hence an abnormality in one critically affects the other. A lot of cases in urology involve minimally invasive robotic and laparoscopic surgical procedures, scope guided procedures, and laser-assisted surgeries. There’s a range of topics that a urologist is trained in:

  • Open and minimally invasive surgeries
  • Fiber optic endoscopic equipment
  • Real-time ultrasound guidance
  • Utilization of various kinds of lasers for the treatment of multiple malignant and benign conditions

A kidney stone specialist may typically combine both medicinal care and surgical intervention to achieve the desired result. Urology helps treat a melange of conditions:

  • UTI (Urinary Tract Infections)
  • Bladder or prostate cancer
  • Congenital abnormalities
  • Stress incontinence
  • Traumatic injury
  • Renal stone removal, etc.

Department:

Urology is a branch in healthcare that often deals with multi-organ abnormalities majorly occurring in the urinary tract and/or the reproductive tract. The domain of Urology can be classified into several sub-specialities:

Endourology

An endourologist specializes in diagnosing the closed manipulation of the urinary tract. Endourology takes some major aides from minimally invasive urologic surgical interventions.

Laparoscopy

Laparoscopy is one of the fastest transforming procedures in healthcare today. Aimed at reduced post-surgical pain and incision size, this type of surgery often includes robot-assisted, camera guided surgical procedures. Extensively used in surgeries of the prostate, ureter, and kidney.

Urologic oncology

This department consists of a team of highly-skilled and extensively-trained doctors who specialize in curing cancer occuring in the urinary and reproductive tracts. Their scope of conditions include:

  • Prostate cancer
  • Bladder cancer
  • Ureter cancer
  • Testicle cancer
  • Adrenal Gland
  • Penis

Neurourology

This discipline deals with the nervous system of the genitourinary system, and cures conditions that give rise to abnormal urination.

Pediatric urology

This specialization, as the name suggests deals with abnormalities in kids. It is also known as Children’s Urology.

Andrology

An andrologist specializes in all the urological abnormalities concerning male health.

Reconstructive urology

Reconstructive urology aims to cure patients through the restructuring of the genitourinary tract or by restoring function.

Female urology

Majorly deals with - Urinary incontinence, Overactive bladder, and pelvic organ prolapse.
