Anaesthesia

Anaesthesia refers to a controlled, near-zero-sensation state of the human body that is required for surgical/medical purposes. The branch of Anaesthesia relies on multiple pillars / purpose-driven procedures - Paralysis (Relaxation of the body muscles), Analgesia (pain prevention procedure), Amnesia (memory removal), and/or unconsciousness. ‘Anaesthetized’ refers to the state of being under an anaesthetic drug. Anaesthesia helps several painless surgeries and medical procedures that may otherwise cause enormous pain and suffering to the patient. In certain cases, surgery without anaesthesia may even be technically impossible.

About Anaesthesia

There are several different types of anaesthesia that are applied for different purposes and procedures. For example, for the purpose of any dental treatment like tooth extractions or root canals, dental anaesthesia is used on the patient.

Anaesthesia can be further subdivided into three broad buckets:

  • General anaesthesia: This method of anaesthesia aids to suppress the central nervous system, its activities, and helps the patient attain an absolute state of unconsciousness and zero stimuli to sensation. Loss of consciousness under this type of anaesthesia can be achieved with either intravenous agents and/or inhalation agents.
  • Sedation: This procedure majorly aims to prohibit anxiety and the development of long-term memories; this doesn’t necessarily involve driving unconsciousness in the patient.
  • Regional and local anaesthesia: This method is used to hinder the transmission of neurotic impulses from targeted organs of the body. Depending on the treatment plan being followed and the medical procedures involved, this method can either be used independently or in conjunction with general anaesthesia and/or a sedative. In this process, the peripheral nerves are targeted through the drugs to anaesthetize a part of the human body that is isolated, such as numbing organs during dental work, or developing a nerve blockage to facilitate muscle surgeries. As an extension/alternate of the procedure, spinal, epidural anaesthesia or a blend of both techniques may be performed along the CNS, which will aim to suppress sensations coming from the nerves.

Depending on the medical/surgical procedure being employed, a doctor/clinician may choose either or a combination of drugs to achieve the category and intensity of anaesthesia required. The various types of drugs considered for any of the above anaesthetic procedures include - analgesics, general anaesthetics, narcotics, local anaesthetics, neuromuscular-blocking drugs, hypnotics, and/or sedatives.

Risks / Complications associated with Anaesthesia:

The complications associated are often impossible to segregate from the factors which aroused the need for anaesthesia in the first place, but broadly, however, they can be classified into three buckets:

  • Patient Health: This has the greatest impact amongst all three. Risks include - pulmonary embolism, heart attack, and death. Minor risks may persist such as - readmission, vomiting and continued nausea.
  • Procedure oriented complications / stress
  • Anaesthetic Technique
