A Simple Guide to Hysterectomy – Reasons, Types & Major Approache

Updated On: 05/07/2022

The uterus, also known as the womb, is the location in a woman's body where the foetus develops. The surgical removal of the uterus (womb) is performed when a woman has uterus-related problems after her childbearing is finished.

A woman cannot become pregnant after having a hysterectomy. There are numerous reasons or symptoms that a doctor may recommend uterine removal. Any of these symptoms would be treated with medication first by a doctor. Endometriosis, for example, is treated with hormone therapy.

Aster Hospitals is one of the best gynaecology hospitals in Dubai.

Reasons for Hysterectomy · Uterine fibroids that cause pain, bleeding, or other problems

· Uterine prolapse, which is a sliding of the uterus from its normal position into the vaginal canal

· Cancer of the uterus, cervix, or ovaries

· Endometriosis

· Abnormal vaginal bleeding

· Chronic pelvic pain

· Adenomyosis, or a thickening of the uterus Consult the best gynaecologist in Dubai for more information.

The surgeon chooses the best procedure for each case based on the reason for the hysterectomy as well as the patient's medical history and condition.

Most women who have their uterus removed have no serious problems or complications as a result of the surgery. It is, however, considered major surgery. During the recovery process, care must be taken, and the doctor's advice must be followed exactly.

Hysterectomy Surgical Techniques

Surgeons approach hysterectomy differently depending on the surgeon's experience, the reason for the hysterectomy, and the patient's overall health.

The hysterectomy technique will influence healing time and the type of scar that remains after the operation.

There are two approaches to surgery: traditional or open surgery and minimally invasive surgery (MIP).

Hysterectomy through open surgery

An abdominal hysterectomy is an open surgical procedure. This is the most common method of hysterectomy, accounting for approximately 54% of all benign disease.

An abdominal hysterectomy is performed by making a 5- to 7-inch incision across the belly, either up and down or side to side. The uterus is then removed through this incision by the surgeon.

A person usually spends 2-3 days in the hospital after having an abdominal hysterectomy. After healing, there is also a visible scar at the site of the incision.

Radical Hysterectomy

The parametrium, or tissue surrounding the uterus, is surgically removed during a radical hysterectomy. This procedure is usually reserved for cancerous cases by surgeons.

Additional surgeries may be necessary at the time of the hysterectomy. The surgeons may need to remove one or both ovaries and tubes. The operation is known as a salpingo-oophorectomy. Oophorectomy is the surgical removal of only the ovaries.

What to expect after a Hysterectomy?

If the ovaries were also removed during the hysterectomy, you will be in menopause. If your ovaries were not removed, you may reach menopause sooner than you would have otherwise.

Most people are advised to avoid sex and heavy lifting for six weeks following a hysterectomy.

The majority of those polled believe that their hysterectomy improved or cured their primary problem (for example, pain or heavy periods).
