List Of Retinal Disorders
08/02/2022

List of Retinal disorders

There are many retinal disorders that can affect the retina. Some are minor but others can cause severe vision loss or blindness. That’s why it is important to consult the best eye doctor in Dubai for a regular eye checkup. Aster Hospitals, one of the best hospitals in Dubai, has an experienced team of ophthalmologists.

There are treatments for retinal disorders, depending on the retina’s condition and the damage caused by the disease.

What are the common symptoms of a damaged retina?

  • Sudden vision loss

  • Blurred vision

  • Defects in side vision

  • Eye pain

  • Night blindness

  • Light flashes

  • Photophobia

  • Eye redness

Doctors may conduct a series of tests to confirm a retinal disorder. Sometimes these symptoms also arise due to other eye problems. You can also visit other eye hospitals in Dubai.

These are some of the common retinal disorders:

Retinal tear

It is a condition where the vitreous layer is separated from the retina, causing a damaged or torn retina. This condition may happen as we age. Symptoms include flashing lights and floaters. And in some cases, the patient may not experience any symptoms.

This condition can be cured if diagnosed at an early stage. The treatments include laser or cryotherapy ( a freezing procedure).

Macular degeneration

It is a condition where the centre of the retina starts deteriorating. The causes of the disease are still unknown, but changes in our retina occur when we age.

Symptoms of the condition include:

  • Blindspot in the centre of your visual field

  • Blurred vision in the centre of your visual field

  • Reduced colour perception

Types of macular degeneration: dry and wet

Many people will experience the dry form, and then it progresses into the wet form in both eyes or one eye.

Retinal detachment

It is a condition where fluid accumulates under the retina. Some of the possible symptoms of the condition:

  • Floaters in the eye

  • Flashes in the eye

  • Decrease in vision

  • Visualizing of grey curtain

  • Blurred vision

What are the common risk factors of retinal detachment?

  • Eye injury

  • Ageing

  • Family history of the condition

  • Past experiences of retinal detachment on any of the eyes

  • Previous cataract surgery

  • Past eye disorder or disease

  • Extreme near-sightedness

Diabetic retinopathy

People with diabetes should be cautious of this condition. Diabetes retinopathy happens due to damaged blood vessels of the retina due to a surge in blood sugar levels. It is leading cause of new blindness in persons aged 25-74 years in the US.

What happens in diabetic retinopathy?

  • Damage of capillaries (back of the eyes) and then fluid leakage into the retina, causing swelling of the retina. The development of abnormal capillaries will worsen one’s vision

How can you prevent or control the condition?

  • Regular monitoring of blood sugar, blood pressure, and blood lipids

Here are a few tips to prevent vision loss :

  • Maintaining blood sugar kevels

  • Regular eye checkups

  • Have knowledge about family’s eye health history

  • Maintain a healthy weight

  • Consume foods that are good for the eyes

  • Relax the yes during working hours
