Long-Term Side Effects of Fibroid Embolization: What Are They?

Uterine fibroid embolization (UFE) is a uterine fibroids treatment procedure. Fibroids are benign uterine tumours that begin to grow inside the smooth muscle within the uterine walls. It is possible for one or more to grow at the same time. UFE is also known as uterine artery embolization (UAE), but this term is less precise.

UAE is used to treat conditions that result in severe pelvic bleeding. UFE only refers to cases where this procedure is used to treat fibroids.

Fibroids can grow as large as a grapefruit or even larger. It's unclear why fibroids form, but they're fairly common.

Aster Hospitals is one of the best gynaecology hospitals in Dubai.

Long term side effects

Many people have had positive outcomes with UFE. It is normal to experience some pain and cramping after the procedure. Most people return to their normal routines within a few weeks of having UFE.

Long-term side effects are possible, as with any other procedure. If you are concerned about any of these potential side effects, consult your doctor.

Fertility change

It may be more difficult to get pregnant after UFE in some cases. There is a risk of uterine or ovarian damage.

A review of studies published in 2018 found that UFE had a lower rate of pregnancy than myomectomy (surgery to remove fibroids). Overall, there isn't much research on pregnancy outcomes after UFE.

UFE is frequently not advised for people who want to become pregnant in the future.

If you intend to become pregnant in the future, make sure your doctor is aware of your intentions. Other fibroid treatment options may be available to you.

Early menopause

The majority of fibroids appear before menopause. It's difficult to say how frequently UFE treatment causes early menopause.

Changes in ovarian function and egg quality can occur as a result of UFE, according to a 2016 literature review trusted Source. This is most likely caused by changes in blood flow to the ovaries, which results in a condition known as premature ovarian insufficiency.

According to an older study from 2013Trusted Source, UAE may be more likely to cause premature ovarian insufficiency (POI) in women over the age of 45.

Early menopause can have an impact on heart and bone health. Some people who suffer from it may require hormone replacement therapy.

Pain

It is normal to feel some pain or cramping following UFE. In the hospital, pain medication may be administered via an intravenous (IV) line.

You may be given a prescription for pain medication or instructions on how to use over-the-counter pain relievers when you return home.

UFE has grown in popularity as a treatment option for uterine fibroids. It has generally good outcomes and is minimally invasive, with little downtime afterward. The procedure could have an impact on fertility, pregnancy, and menstruation. Consult the best gynaecologist in Dubai for more clarity

No single procedure will be the best choice for everyone. UFE is just one of many fibroids treatment options. Discuss all of your options with your doctor, as well as any potential side effects, to determine which is best for you.
