Should women take supplements?

Women have specific nutrients needs through out the lifespan. As a teen, pregnancy, post pregnancy, menopausal at each stages the requirements of nutrients keeps changes. What more important is nutrients needs may differ depending on your health status. Nutrients need change throughout a women’s life. Certain women are at risk of developing nutrients deficiency. 

For example – nutrients like calcium, iron, folic acid are increased before and during pregnancy. Where supplementation is needed. 

Many adolescence suffers from iron deficiency anaemia due to various reasons. Nutritional status, food unavailability, socio-economic status, unhealthy eating habits are few we can observe. 

Taking supplements are best when medical professionals finds out if you at risk of developing or deficient to vitamin or mineral deficiency by following a blood test. 

As vitamin or mineral toxicity might affect your vital organs and their work might get affect. 

 

Basically who are at risk? 

Teen or child baring age – teen pregnancy is might at risk without a effective supplementations. 

Post-menopausal or older age women are at greater risk of vitamin deficiency like vit A C D K, B12, FOLATE, B6, B1 AND B2. Studies also shows that women who are with obesity are at greater risk of developing vitamin deficiency including B12 and vit D.Additionally, women who undergo bariatric surgery are significantly more likely to develop vitamin deficiency. Women who smoke or drink excessively are at risk of developing vitamin deficiency; this is due to mal absorption of vitamins or inadequate dietary intake. 

Women with certain medical conditions like type 2 diabetes, gastrointestinal disorders, autoimmune disorders and eating disorders might be at higher risk of developing nutrient deficiency.
